Fulgurite is a tubular piece of cemented-fused sand, produced at the impact site of a lightning strike during a thunderstorm. The quartz grains are changed by the intense heat into shiny quartz glass, which is known as lechatelierite, and which may be seen lining the central tubular cavity through the length of the specimen. |

Large cabinet size specimen from Mt Cleveland Tin Mine in Tasmania. The display surface is covered with tiny dolomite crystals forming little bubbles. Light bluish fluorite cubes are sprinkled amongst the dolomite, all on a gray matrix. The mine has been closed for some twenty years, so any specimens from this locality are now virtually impossible to source. |
